Cc Foundation is pleased to present Golden Record: Not Null Constraint Failed, an exhibition by artist Chen Baoyang from July, 25 to November 1, 2020.

This exhibition is the artist's most comprehensive exhibition anywhere to date and his first institutional solo show in 2020, Including his many new artworks. It covers various art forms of Chen's creative output, winding through his extensive stylistic and thematic evolutions by a digital image, digital video, digital interactive facility, AI and other digital media forms; exploring the multiple relations between art, science, technology and human-through interpreting the intrinsic connection between AI and social imagination, reexamining and reflecting on the future co-existed world of man and machine created by technology revolution, thus creating a unique and diverse art sensory experience of science and technology for the audience.

The exhibition's title Golden Record is inspired by the two records which were sent to the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. These two recordings contain the languages, sounds, and images of all civilizations and life forms on Earth and bear human imaginations of other intelligent beings' co-existence in the universe. Since the solo exhibition in New York in 2016, Chen begins to explore the concept of "definition and boundary." "Our expectations and fears of AI are both predictions and limitations." The title "Not Null Constraint Failed" indicates a failure to define a variable in coding. "Changes must come from standardization. We can't be infinite for no reason, but we can be positive to fantasy." This time, artist Chen hopes that the audience can view the unknown AI field with a positive and poetic attitude, just as they see the golden record floating in the vast universe.

The exhibition's spatial logic stems from the artworks' implicit spatial narrative line, placing the exhibition space between reality and the virtual world. The body of the exhibition consists of artist's five new artworks in 2020 and one previous work in the ART021 Cc Foundation project in 2019, presenting a complete picture of Chen's creative and artistic contribution of AI exploration. In this context, audience becomes the continuation, their questions are raised from the exhibition, but may not be answered in the exhibition. Just as artist Chen said, "Art is a process of pursuing truth, but not an end." The only message on the Golden Record in 1977 was: "Hello from the children of planet Earth." So there comes a part of the journey in the exhibition.
The exhibition Golden Record: Not Null Constraint Failed will last from July 25,2020 to November 1,2020.

About the Artist
Baoyang Chen (b. 1989) is an artist who works at the intersection of art and technology. He graduated from Columbia University with a master's degree. Chen's artistic practice originates from his thinking that technology is more than a way of making art, yet becoming a collaborator of the artist. He often hacks the technology by altering its default application, to further fulfill his artistic goal. He also writes about "Technology as Author." By synthesizing our collective experience with the desire to answer the ontological and ethical question of technology, he examines the boundary between us, machine, and beyond, in-between perceptual and embodied space. His research has been published in conferences and journals of IJCAI, IEEE, ACM, and etc. He is also a review member of EMNLP and served as chairman of MMEDIA 2020 AI + Art. His solo exhibitions include Do Androids Dream of Electric Cows 2.0 (K11 Wuhan, Wuhan, China), Do Androids Dream of Electric Cows (Gallery Yang, Beijing, China, 2017), The Framework (Cloud Gallery, New York, USA, 2016).
